Chapter Thirteen

JOSHUA HAD given me a lot to think about. Since he’d quit talking and quit answering my questions, I had nothing to do but think and stare out at the crystal blue lake. Actually, as boring as fishing was, it was a pleasant afternoon. The sun was shining, and there was a cool breeze coming off the water. Alex had found us a nice spot. We only saw one other canoe sail by, and it was way off in the distance. It seemed like we had the entire peaceful lake to ourselves.

But all the quiet gave me too much time to overthink. What did Joshua mean by saying Alex isn’t normal? Not normal how? Was Alex gay? Did Joshua know? But if Alex were gay, why would he hate Zach so much? Zach is hot. I’d do Zach, but I guess you already know that.

Maybe Joshua only thought Alex wasn’t normal because they were brothers? I know Michelle isn’t normal. Well, she is, but I didn’t always think so. She’s really smart, so I was surprised when she only took a couple years of community college before dropping out. She wanted to study political science and work for some liberal congressperson or senator. She waved her sign higher than anybody else when we were protesting Markdowns. But now the best she can do is answer phones for a lawyer in Stanwood. I learned that it wasn’t entirely her fault when it was time for me to think about my own college.

Michelle is four years older than me, and after she dropped out, I thought I’d prove how much better I was by asking Dad about my college money. Dad laughed.

“You’re living in it,” he told me. “We had to use your college savings and Michelle’s to pay off the house. It was a choice between college for you two or living indoors. What choice would you make?”

I was only left with one choice: Markdowns. I’d struggled some in school. I never could have put together enough scholarships to get me to college. And I already knew enough about student loans from Michelle. She explained that the system is set up to keep students living in poverty and working for the banks. College has gotten too expensive while wages have remained stagnant. Most jobs won’t pay enough to make up for the cost of college even if you’ve paid cash for your education. Add in crippling interest rates and you’ll never dig out.

Jennifer really had the right idea. The only way out was to get out of Groverville. Why would anyone want to move to Groverville? But that’s what Alex’s family had done—because Alex wasn’t normal. No. Alex’s mom wasn’t normal. Alex had told me that his dad didn’t want to move, but his mom thought Middleton was going to—what did she say?—corrupt him. She didn’t know Groverville. I ignored all the town gossip, but there’s so much sometimes, it just seeps in. There’s no getting by without hearing about all the cheating husbands and cheating wives.
